Dear Colorado School Nurses,
Ethylene oxide (EtO) is a cancer-causing gas used to sterilize medical equipment, some dried foods, and some plastics. Children may be more susceptible to the health effects of EtO exposure. As children grow, they tend to be more susceptible to the harmful effects caused by chemicals, including chemicals that can damage DNA such as EtO. There are four commercial EtO sterilization facilities in Colorado and they are within 5 miles of hundreds of schools and child care centers.
EPA proposed updates to standards for commercial sterilizers requiring stricter emissions controls for ethylene oxide to reduce cancer risks to surrounding communities. EPA's final rule will be released before March of 2024. Please reach out to EPA and your local US Senator and Representative and demand the strongest health protections for our communities.
