September-Self Awareness Month

I can't believe that August has come and gone and we are already finishing up the first week of September!

September continues to be a busy month for professional school nurses as they are continuing to support students with their health needs, and staff with training and delegations. Both new seasoned professional school nurses may be overwhelmed with the responsibilities the beginning of the school brings. During this hectic time of year, the professional school nurse must find time to stay healthy and for self-care.

Self-care is an essential provision listed in the code of ethics by the American Nurses Association (ANA). The fifth provision states that the moral respect that nurses extend to all human beings should extend to themselves as well. Simultaneously, the ANA’s 2023-2025 strategic plan includes the development of holistic offerings dedicated to support the well-being of the nurse.

September is “Self-Awareness Month” and September 12th is “National Mindfulness Day”. Self-awareness is vital for mental health and well-being, for when we know, truly know, who we are, we can shape our life and our future. Take some time in September to focus on yourself and your well-being needs. What do you need to stay healthy? Check out this month’s challenge of Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation to reclaim your self-care. And always remember to pause and  just breath.
