Award Criteria/Guidelines
Each year the Colorado Association of School Nurses is proud to recognize its outstanding members in the categories below.  To nominate a CASN member download the appropriate nomination form.  The deadline for the nomination forms to be submitted to the CASN Awards Committee is, March 15 (postmarked on or before).  Send nomination forms to:  CASN Awards Committee, PO Box 751, Windsor, CO, 80550.
 
CASN School Nurse of the Year
This award is to publicly recognize school nurses in Colorado by annually honoring one school nurse who demonstrated excellence in school nursing practice and leadership in school health.  Anyone can submit a nomination.  Information packets will be given to the nominee after they have been notified that they have been nominated.  Priority will be given to those nominees who meet the NASN requirements for the National School Nurse of the Year.  Nominees must be current members of NASN/CASN, and of the preceding two years with no membership lapse.  The nominee must be a registered professional nurse, and have five years experience as a school nurse, and currently practice full-time as a school nurse (If the only school nurse position in a community involves fewer hours than usual, it will be considered full time for the purpose of this eligibility criteria, also more than 50% of nominee’s time must be spent in direct care). Nominee may not be on the CASN Board.  Evidence of excellence in school nursing practice must be based on the NASN’s Standards of Professional School Nursing Practice (2005).

CASN School Nurse Administrator of the Year
The intent of this award is to publicly recognize school nurse administrators by annually honoring one administrator who administers and coordinates quality school nursing services and health programs.  This award is open to any current school nurse administrator in Colorado.  Nominees may be nominated by any school nurse, parent, or other administrator.  The nominee must be a registered professional nurse, be a member of NASN/CASN for the current and preceding five years (without lapse in membership). The nominee must have completed five years experience in school health, and currently practice full-time and have the main responsibility be the supervision, administration, and coordination of nursing service and health programs.  Nominee may not be on the CASN Board at the time of nomination.  Evidence of excellence in school nursing administration must be based on ANA Scope and Standards for Nurse Administrators.  The recipient will also be submitted as Colorado’s nomination for the National award if all criteria for the NASN award are met.

CASN School Nurse Advocate of the Year
This award is open to nomination from any CASN member.  Nominees may include:
  1. A commercial vendor who has continuously supported CASN financially
  2. An organization/individual who has continuously supported or has helped in promoting school nursing or school health services in Colorado

This may include such individuals as a school administrator, parent, teacher, health aide, volunteer, etc.  Submit your nomination form and justification in writing by the deadlines, to the Awards Chairperson.  The information is presented to the Board and a majority vote by Board members constitutes selection.

This award is open to nomination from any CASN member.  Nominees may include:
Legislative organizations/individuals that have continuously supported or have helped in promoting school nursing or school health services in Colorado.

Process for Selecting Recipients of Awards
  1. Nominations will be submitted on a CASN nomination form along with a letter citing reasons for nomination. Deadline is March 15.
  1. The nominations will be reviewed for complete information.
  1. SNOY and SNAOY candidates will be contacted to submit a curriculum vitae and evidence supporting the standards of school nursing practice/nurse administrator by April 15.
  1. A committee will be selected to include a past recipient, state nurse consultant, the chairman of the selection committee (past-president of CASN) and the NASN director. The applications will be reviewed using the NASN guidelines.
  1. The recommendation of the committee will be submitted to the Executive Board no later than April 30.
  1. Executive Board will vote to accept the recommendations and the awards will be presented at the Spring conference.
  1. The application for NASN consideration must be submitted by October 1st. The completed NASN application will be the responsibility of the recipient.  (The Awards Committee may convene to assist the NASN applicant as need arises).
